Carey Mulligan- 2013's Style Icon

Carey Mulligan has been one to watch for the past few years. Having had early success as a teenager in the remake of Pride and Prejudice alongside Keira Knightly she has successfully transformed into a Hollywood A-lister.

Roles in British films such as An Education documenting the memoirs of journalist Lynn Barber and Never Let Me Go adapted fromKazuo Ishiguro's novel cemented her as a gem in the British film industry. This week sees this year's Cannes film festival go off with a bang to the opening of Bas Lurman's remake of the classic American novel 'The Great Gatsby' and who should the leading lady be but Carey Mulligan.

Carey has proved herself as a professional actress and after a string of successful Hollywood features she looks set for sudden fame as The Great Gatsby finds her plastered on billboards and bus stations across the world. It's not just her acting career Mulligan is famous for, her relationships and style often see her grabbing headlines too.

Wedding Mumford and Sons front-man Marcus Mumford in a small ceremony in Somerset only fuelled her fame as the two were photographed going about their business and at this year's Brit Awards. Before that her short relationship with Wall Street co-star Shia LeBouf saw the media frenzy for a photograph of the pair.

Most influential of all though is Mulligan's sheer elegance and style. She has the ability to dress her figure exquisitely whilst also seeming down to earth, with no airs about her. A key moment in her fashion career was cutting her hair. From long, teenage locks she revealed a smart, elegant pixie crop which showed off her cheek bones and big eyes. Suddenly the beautiful girl next door looked like a model.

Get the Look

You don't need to cut your hair off to get Carey Mulligan's style, although if a hairdresser thinks it will work with your face shape then there is no harm in giving it a try. However, style speaks volumes and Carey's style should work with most figures, hair styles and attitudes.

Never predictable Carey has taken risks, but mostly because she knows her figure and what will suit her.

Cropped Trousers

Having a naturally curvy figure Carey often opts to show off her slim pins and focus attention on her delicate bone structure. She wears cropped trousers with plain white t-shirts or for a more French look she will wear striped breton t-shirts or striped cardigans. Great for spring and summer cropped trousers go brilliantly with pumps, heels and espadrilles. Another benefit is that lots of straight legged trousers can be rolled up to act as cropped trousers without you having to spend a penny.

Jackets

Denim or leather Mulligan knows how to cover up but still look stylish. Both denim and leather jackets can work in spring, summer and autumn, maybe in winter if you're brave. Cropped sleeves in the summer show a more relaxed look and oversized worn with her cropped trousers accentuate her legs even more.

Dresses

Attending numerous events, premiers and award shows Carey has to wear a lot of dresses and always gets it spot on. She takes risks but only with one element, if she wears a simple dress she'll wear statement jewellery and shoes, or if she has a fussy dress she won't over accessorise. At recent events she has been seen with no accessories but her engagement ring and wedding ring.
She has also made waves with her infamous 2012 Met Ball dress. The Prada dress was a stunning metallic number made of hundreds of paillettes and barely accessorised. She was named best dressed for this choice and confirmed her place in fashion magazines. Later she auctioned the dress for charity, raising nearly $3,000.

Smile

Last, but by no means least, Carey has a gorgeous smile. When she is modelling, this is often hidden by a straight face, but a genuine smile from her reveals dimples, character and a fun-loving girl. Nothing can make you look more stylish than a happy glow.
